Sports Illustrated unravels why the University of Mississippi has a new football coach. But more importantly, it explains why scandal remains ever-present.
Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze resigned before he could get fired Thursday, but not for the reason anyone would have expected him to resign. It would have made perfect sense had Ole Miss discovered violations of NCAA rules that would have doomed the program’s defense in the case that will go before the Committee on Infractions in the coming months. But according to chancellor Jeffrey Vitter, that isn’t why Freeze is out of a job. “We simply cannot accept the conduct in his personal life that we’ve discovered,” Vitter said.
Closer to campus, the Jackson Clarion-Ledger makes clear it has no sympathy for Freeze.
Freeze also has a wife and three teenage daughters, and they’re going to get the worst end of things as that last name is dragged through the mud and made into a joke. He earned it, not them, and not just by his misbehavior but by holding himself up as something more than a football coach. No man is without sin, but when you strut about as if you are then people will delight in the fall.
