An open letter to Sean Spicer

Mr. Spicer,

It’s time for you to go.

I don’t need a further explanation about what you meant to say about Adolf Hitler and chemical weapons. While I hope you have a firm and clear apology prepared for what you said, in the end it doesn’t matter.

It’s time for you to go.

You need to go primarily because you are in over your head. Each word you say when you stand in front of the media must be perfect; you are representing the President of the United States and the American people. Yes, that’s a high bar, and it might be unattainable. But you need to reach for it every single day. If you’ve tried, you’ve failed. If you haven’t, you’ve let down your boss and the American people.

I find no happiness in asking that you quit. (And if you don’t, then the president must fire you.) You have a family counting on you. You are no different from any other husband who tries to do the best he can each day to take care of his family.

I’m not asking that you step aside because of any hate or animus. While it might seem trivial to compare you to a professional athlete, the reality is the same: the person might (or might not) be kind, humble, generous, smart and admirable, but if he or she doesn’t perform at the level that is expected, then he or she is shown the door.

It is incumbent upon you as a public servant to step away from your position and allow someone else to assume its responsibilities. Please do that.

Thank you.
